After the conclusion of the spectacular opening ceremony, ICC World Twenty20 kicked off with the 1st match between the hosts England and minnows Netherlands. Everyone in the stadium and viewers watching the match were hoping England to win the match hands down. They started off brilliantly with the bat with an aggressive opening partnership of 102 in first 11 overs. Ravi Bopara and Luke Wright provided them with a great platform from which their middle order could capitalize and post a very huge total. But after Bopara fell to a mistimed shot, England looked out of touch and finished their batting display with a decent total of 162 in 20 overs. Since they were facing Netherlands, there were no nerves in the English camp about the total and were looking to win easily. But the Dutch team had other plans. They had a terrific start with the bat and Reekers got them going with a crisp 20 of 13 balls. After his departure in came De Grooth who played the most memorable innings of his cricket carrier scoring a composed and well constructed 49 in 30 balls. He scored a boundary of every over and kept the asking rate within 7 runs per over. Giving him a good company was Borren who scored 30 valuable. In the end 7 runs were needed of the final over. Broad was asked to bowl that over. Ten Doeschate and Schiferli held their nerve and the English team crumbled under pressure to gift Netherlands a very famous victory at Lord’s on the opening day of the World Twenty20. If this is a sign for things to follow, then the spectators and cricket lovers are in for a surprise treat.
